PPA allots P120M to upgrade 3 major ports

By Lawrence Agcaoili (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - The state-run Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has earmarked close to P120 million to modernize and expand three major ports in Bohol as well as in the cities of Iligan and Butuan.
PPA is spending P61.2 million to construct a passenger terminal building and expand the back-up area at the Port of Talibon in Bohol.
The agency is also undertaking a P34.2-million project to construct a transit shed at the Port of Iligan in Lanao del Norte.
Submission and opening of bids for the two projects is scheduled on Jan. 21 wherein companies that are at least 75 percent owned by Filipinos are allowed to join.
PPA also earmarked P23.84 million for the paving of the existing back-up area in the Port of Masao in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte.
The submission and opening of bids for the Butuan City project is set on Jan. 22. The bidding would be conducted by the PPA through open competitive bidding using non-discretionary pass-or-fail criteria in the revised implementing rules and regulations of Republic Act 9184, otherwise known as the Government Procurement Reform Act.
PPA is pursuing major port projects nationwide this year, including ports damaged by Super Typhoon Yolanda, in preparation for the integration of member-countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) next year.
PPA general manager Juan Sta. Ana earlier said the government is committed to rebuild the port facilities damaged by Yolanda last Nov. 8 and at the same time pursue the modernization of the ports of Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Gen. Santos and Zamboanga.
Sta. Ana said the agency is also pursuing the privatization of the Port of Davao.
“We are expected to undertake missionary port projects in support of the government’s social reform agenda,” he added.
He pointed out that PPA is continuing the simplification of its processes and reducing the processing time of its front-line transactions as well as the implementation of its rationalization plan.
He added that the agency is also pursuing the leveling up of its recruitment processes to ensure that PPA is adequately manned by personnel who more than measure up to the requirements of the job.
