Free Syrian Army Joint Command spokesman Fahd al-Masri told RT Arabic that Israel wants Syrian President Bashar Assad to remain in power to keep Syria a weak state.
Although this is coming from the Russian media RT, and Russia represents a pro-Assad sentiment, there may be some truth to this claim. The Syrian civil war has reached a stalemate, now lingering for 3 years.
Fahd claims Israel has been working hard to keep the civil war going to sap Syria dry before any interregnum which will hopefully be pro-Western.
The ensuing post-civil-war power vacuum is the most awaited event by forces on both sides of the conflict – US-UK-Israel on one side, Iran-Syria-Russia-China on the other side. Everyone is positioning to help fill the vacuum with a new regime that would be friendly to them.
The US is especially nervous that whatever nuclear arsenal Syria may have presently will fall into the hands of an anti-US rebel regime. Back in 2007, Israel had a successful secret bombing of a plutonium nuclear reactor in Al Kibar in Syria uncovered by the Mossad. The US did not support the bombing. At least that was how they made it appear.
The US is working hard to help the Syrian rebels in the hope of installing a pro-Western regime. But that may be wishful thinking. This is seen as a mere temporary alliance, because every Syrian, pro- or anti-Assad, knows the US is forever pro-Israel, the arch-enemy. No popular regime can ever be pro-US in Syria. Gone are the days when the CIA could install the likes of the Shah in the now heavily anti-US Syria. With support from Russia and China, Assad is not likely to fall easily. The US has false expectations that it can maneuver the Syrian civil war to its favor.
A united Syria and Iran will be a powerful Islamic force that US-Israel will have to contend with. The rise of Syrian rebels who will be anti-Iran because Iran supported Assad is the hope and another wishful thinking of the US-Israel partnership. This feared unity would be the first Sunni-Shiite alliance. The US-Israel tandem would prefer to keep them fragmented.
