MANILA, Philippines - As each New Year ushers in, people of all walks of life wish for a better year ahead.
There are those who wear red colored clothes, bigger round dots or even eat 12 grapes.
No matter what lies ahead it is better to prepare.

Here are 4 keys to prepare for a better life

1. Forget about the past and move forward:
Life is not always a bed of roses. Along the way there are obstacles and challenges. 2013 may be considered an unforgettable year. Never before has the country been given much pain and suffering.
Entrepreneurs especially from the disaster stricken areas were shocked to see the once thriving businesses suddenly gone.
It is at this point the person need to stand up and regain confidence. The slogan "Tulong na, Tabang na, Tayo na" speaks of rallying every individual. It is a battle cry to rise and show how resilient the Filipino can be.
The individual alone cannot and may not be able to stand up and start all over. This is where the spirit of the "bayanihan" comes into action. Individuals, organizations foreign and local, government and non-government sprung to action to provide rescue and relief. Today there are still organizations in stricken areas giving counseling. There are also fellow entrepreneurs who are adopting fishermen and other vendors. Life has to go on.

2. Mindset:
If it is a better life, individuals need to take a look at their mindset. Experts believed in the power of the mind.
An orthopedic doctor once shared with me how patients can hasten the healing process by the use of their mind. A person who always thinks poorly of himself will definitely show a low level of self-confidence.
Successful people have proper and positive thinking. Words like "impossible, difficult, cannot", are not in their vocabulary. There is a saying "if there is a will there is a way". Success is not attracted to negatively charged individual.

3. Prepare an inventory of skills and talents:
Through the years, a person accumulates skills and talents. This could be from work experience, exposure to other cultures or self learned. However, there is a tendency to forget as at times it may have become as part of one's self.
Every beginning of the year a general review may be conducted. This will be a good indication on areas, which may need improvement or sustaining expertise.

4. Envision what kind of better life so desired:
Merely aiming for a better life without going to specifics is flying without directions. Is it pursuing a dream to start a retail business? Or at a crossroad between employment or retirement? It may be how to effectively make use of hard earned money.
Years ago, while giving a seminar in Iloilo, I met a young man in his early twenties. He invited me to try his restaurant. Upon seeing the place it was brimming with customers. This man was the eldest of three children of a simple grocery store in Roxas City. He began his concept with a few thousand pesos.
When everything was clear, he borrowed money from his father. The restaurant began to grow and in seven years expanded to 300 branches. The business community was shocked to learn a well-known Filipino hamburger chain purchased 70% of the company for a whopping P3 billion in cash!
The young man was Edgar Sia III, or Injap for short, founder of Mang Inasal. What he has achieved thereafter is another exciting story to watch for.
