DABAWENYOS are enraged over the killing of a former Public Attorney’s Office lawyer.

Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate, who is also the chair of the Union of Peoples Lawyers in Mindanao (UPLM), has condemned the attack on lawyer Emmauel ’Emman’ Ledesma Acuna Jr Friday night. Acuna died in the hospital Sunday afternoon.

“This is yet another proof of the continuing state of impunity that still bedevil and plague our society,” said UPLM chair and Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate. “We register our strongest condemnation of this act! We demand no less than a speedy investigation from the authorities, bring to the bar of justice the perpetrators!”

Acuna, who worked for the Public Attorney’s Office in Davao Region, is an Ateneo de Davao law school alumnus. He also took his undergraduate degree in Ateneo where he wrote for Atenews, the campus publication.

Jay Rosas, Acuna’s fellow Atenews writer, said the victim deserved no such brutality.

“I was shocked with what happened,” Rosas said. “It was so sudden. He did not deserve such brutality. It was a senseless killing and it should be a wake up call.”

Jeremy Eliab, assistant to the president of Ateneo, also called for justice for Acuna.

“It is with deep sadness that I inform you that Atty. Emmanuel Ledesma Acuna, Jr., 31 years old, an ADDU College of Law alumnus, passed away today,” Eliab said. “He was shot by still unidentified gunman last Friday night at BPI parking area, near SM Lanang Premiere. Despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced brain dead last night, and his body soon followed hours after.”

Fr. Joel Tabora, SJ., president of Ateneo de Davao University, said the whole Ateneo community is grieving over the death of Acuna.

“May he rest in the Lord’s peace! Thank you, Atty. Emman, for working for justice for the poor, and paying the price! Your Alma Mater salutes you!” said Tabora.

The head of PAO, lawyer Francis Calatrava, also called on the police to solve the killing of Acuna.

“It is plain murder,” Calatrava said. “Who perpetrated it is a police matter. Determining the motive is likewise a police matter.”

The Police said they are reviewing the close-circuit television camera that captured the incident but admitted having the difficulty because of the quality of the footage. | JMT, NewsDesk
