World's 'most corrupt leaders'

Source: www.christianaid.org.uk

Corruption is endemic among world leaders so a list of the dozen most corrupt leaders in the world was always going to be a tough one to compile. Simple dictators like Pinochet who managed to squirrel away only around $50-100 million while running Chile in the 1970s didn't make the cut.

The most corrupt leaders

Here are the leaders who top the table

1. Mohamed Suharto President of Indonesia (1967-1998) $15–35 billion*

2. Ferdinand Marcos President of the Philippines (1972-1986) $5–10 billion*

3. Teodoro Obiang Nguema President of Equatorial Guinea (1979- present) $5-10 billion***

4. Mobutu Sese Seko President of Zaire (1965-1997) $5 billion*

5. Saparmurat Niyazov President of Turkmenistan (1991-2006) $3-4 billion**

6. Sani Abacha President of Nigeria (1993-1998) $2–5 billion*

7. Slobodan Milosevic President of Serbia/Yugoslavia (1989-2000) $1 billion*

8. Jean-Claude Duvalier President of Haiti (1971-1986) $300-800 million*

9. Alberto Fujimori President of Peru (1990-2000) $600 million*

10. Pavlo Lazarenko Prime Minister of Ukraine (1996-1997) $114-200 million*

11. Arnoldo Alemán President of Nicaragua (1997-2002) $100 million*

12. Joseph Estrada President of the Philippines (1998-2001) $78–80 million*

It should be noted that in this context 'corrupt leaders' is defined as political leaders who have been accused of embezzling the most funds from their countries over the past two decades.
