Video: In a nationwide telecast from Malacanang, Philippine President Noynoy Aquino alerts citizens on the impending damage of Super Typhoon Haiyan / Yolanda.
Codenamed Haiyan (Philippine name: Yolanda), the typhoon is packing 315kph winds and 380kph gusts ( 195mph and 235mph respectively).
This sustained wind strength gives it an equivalent strength of a hurricane in the Category 5 level. Haiyan is expected to greatly impact over numerous locations in the central area of the Philippines (Visayas) but is also expected to bring rains and floods in many other places both in the Northern and Southern parts of the country. The diameter of the typhoon is said to cover 2/3 of the whole archipelago with a diameter measurement of 1,850 km or 1,150 mi.
Yesterday, Philippine President Noynoy Aquino called on the residents of the affected areas to recognize the
threat that Haiyan brings and to obey and cooperate in the evacuation efforts. The Philippine government said that it has mobilized helicopters and planes from the Philippine Air Force as well as provided the needed supplies for the evacuation centers. Aquino added that the devastating effects of the storm can be managed if everyone will work together.
It is expected that more than thirty provincial areas all across the nation will experience landslides and severe flooding. Schools in these provinces have already been cancelled and emergency response teams from local governments have been put on alert. Airline flights and shipping travel in these areas have also been cancelled.
As of early November 8, Friday, Haiyan has hit the province of Eastern Samar around 4:40 AM (Manila time), according to Philippine news reports. It is also pouring rain and hurling heavy winds in other areas in the Visayas as well as northeastern Mindanao and the southern Luzon / Bicol region. Residents of Metro Manila, the country’s economic, political and financial capital, are also bracing themselves for massive floods and dangerous winds. The typhoon is expected to show it’s fury all throughout Friday up to Saturday morning. It is estimated to be outside the Philippine zone by the afternoon of Saturday.
