MANILA -- After announcing that he has bolted the Partido Demokratiko ng Pilipinas (PDP)-Laban to form a new political party, Vice President Jejomar Binay admitted that he is considering Batangas Governor Vilma Santos-Recto as his running mate in 2016.
The actress-turned-politician’s name cropped up when Binay went to Batangas in February for a presentation of the government’s shelter program. Both Binay and Santos were mum then about their potential tandem in 2016.
In an interview with TV5, Binay finally admitted he is considering Santos. “Oo, lahat naman ay worth considering,” he said.
However, he quickly added that any decision now will be too early. “Malayo pa ang 2016, marami pang mangyayari. Bakit naman magsasabi ka na agad ng magiging VP mo. Lahat ay kino-consider pa natin. Kung bibiglain mo 'yung mga nag-aasam asam, hindi na magkakagusto sa iyo,” he explained.
Binay has made no secret of his plan to run in 2016. Last week, he announced that he will form a new political party because of a rift with members of PDP-Laban, which he had co-founded.
“Meron kasing problema sa party, especially sa leadership. Ayaw ko mang mag-break up 'yung partido, sabi ko kailangan tanggapin na natin 'yung nangyayari, dahil sa maraming pagkakataon na kami, 'yung mga leaders in particular, hiwa-hiwalay pa sa pagsabak sa halalan,” he said, referring to Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, PDP-Laban president, who joined the ruling administration’s slate in the 2012 elections.
PDP-Laban coalesced with other political parties to form the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) but Pimentel did not like the UNA stalwarts’ decision to include his rival, former Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, in the line-up.
“Para hindi na lang lumala pa ang hindi pagkakaisa na tila lumalabas sa partido, kailangan i-consider namin, time na siguro na mag-move on,” Binay said.
Among those who will be joining him in his new party is Cebu Rep. Gwen Garcia and boxing champ and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao.
Binay also insisted there is no animosity between him and President Benigno Aquino III.
“Simulang-simula pa naman magkaiba na kami ng party. Pero I think that we should set aside 'yung politika, tapos na 'yung eleksyon noong 2010. Sama-sama tayo sa paglilingkod sa bansa with the guidance and leadership of the President. 'Yun ang sinasabing ibang politika, hindi ito 'yung porke't oposisyon ka, laging mali ang ginagawa ng administration,” the Vice President said.
